In mid-September this was an absolutely stunning place to go - snow dusted mountains, not very busy yurts, good walking, and great hospitality. The altitude affected a number of people in the group, and it was cold at night, so take appropriate clothing. The yurts were being dismantled, as we were there at the end of the season. Fascinating watching the herds of horses, sheep, and cattle being rounded up using working horses and dogs - a lifestyle that has disappeared in most of the world. Spent two nights here - could have spent a third if hiking or horseback riding.
Song Kol, one of your must-visit locations in Kyrgyzstan. Interesting for its nomadic scenery and lifestyle of local shepherds. If you can, visit the lake on horseback.
There are various treks to the lake, but we'd recommend the two-days trek from Kyz Art village. Horses riding and nights in yurts will make it unforgettable. Just take the warm clothes, because the weather at Song Kol can change quickly. It's interesting to observe the life of local people, their work with herds and everyday activities around the yurt.

If you are brave enough, try the local kumys, which is fresh and tasty. Local yurts offers various levels of comfort, but all of them are ready to host the tourists. This was the highlight of our horseback tour with CBT. We arrived at Song Kol Lake on the second day of the tour. We had lunch at one of the yurts before riding along the lake to another yurt to stay. The ride between the 2 lakes was on a flat grass plain, hence, our guide allowed us to try galloping with the horses. It was a really unforgettable experience galloping on the plains beside the lake.
After reaching the yurt that we were supposed to stay for the night, our guide brought us to swim in the lake. It was a great experience swimming in a lake with such fantastic views, even though the water was chilling. Do note that temperatures can get pretty cold at night.
Do bring more warm clothing or stay in yurts that have a heater/stove. Overall, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you have several days in Kyrgyzstan, this place is highly recommended. But it is not for everyone. The altitude is 3000m high and we experienced snow in a midday on the way. My ear became sore and it continued even after I came back to my hotel, which is 1800m high.( But when I tried yoga nose breathing, the pain suddenly disappeared!) So prepare well. At first I asked CBT for a one night two day trip from Bishkek with an English speaking driver and guide, staying overnight at a yurt tent.

They said 375 $ for a solo traveler. Then by examining a breakdown I figured out that if I arrange on my own it will cost less than half. My problem of staying in the yurt is that the drop off toilet is outside( and in fact 50m away from the yurt and no lamps). Could not enjoy the thought of walking in the freezing darkness, even in a romantic place.
So I arranged to stay in Hotel Adamkaly for 2 nights and visit the lake during a day. Parts of the road from Kochkor to Batai Aral are bumpy and it crosses a creek. Some drivers try to take you in a normal car,but 4WD is a must.
My hotel arranged a lunch in the yurt. And people in the yurt brought horses which were gentle enough for a leisurely ride. The landscape there was breathtaking. It reminded me of Mongolian highland with an addition of a blue lake and snow capped mountains. It ended up to be a trip of 4 people including a driver and a guide with Lexus jeep. But still the whole cost was less than the CBT offer.
( It will be much more economical to go to Kochkor on your own and arrange a jeep trip to the lake by CBT).
